Program Concept

WHU is authorized to grant doctoral degrees and bestows the title Doctor of Economic Science (Dr. rer. pol.), based on a dissertation and a disputation. Both the dissertation and the disputation act as an indicator for the exceptional qualification which the doctoral student obtains by joining the doctoral program: the ability to independent scientific work.

The doctoral program tends likewise to doctoral students who intend to work (again) in practical fields and those who aim an academic career after their doctorate.

You may pass the doctoral program either as internal or external doctoral student. Internal student means that during your doctorate, you work as WHU research staff member for at least 3/8 of a fulltime job. Job offers can either be found here or on the web pages of the chairs. External means that you are not or insignificantly employed as WHU research staff member.

Within the doctoral program at the WHU, the participants will receive an integrative perception with regard to economic and business problems and will be able to develop complexe strategies. They will be prepared to work afterwards within internationally operating organizations and a global working environment. In addition, they will learn to analyse and structure complexe facts and circumstances, to priorise issues as regards content and time, to integrate various perspectives and to derivate and to implement solution alternatives. Another core educational objective within the doctoral program at WHU is the student's ability to develop research results and to publish them in international, high-ranking peer reviewed journals.

Demanding prerequisites, ambitious personal and professional competences of the applicants, continous support as well as structured studies compose the basic to achieve these aims.

30 chairs, a service oriented administration and a modern infrastructure form a creative and performance supporting environment. The personal, almost familiar atmosphere and a cooperation which is affected by mutual respect and confidence lead to a high identification of all stakeholders with the WHU and coin the WHU spirit.
