Business partnering in a digital age

Impact of digitalization on controllers discussed at WHU-CIMA event in Düsseldorf.

Business ecosystems are transforming technologies such as Robotic Process Automation, Blockchain or Artificial Intelligence. But behind these technologies, there are still human beings fitted with skills. What does that mean for the controller? What is the impact of digitization and digitalization on his role within the company? Experts from all around the globe discussed these questions on 27 May at the CIMA Centre on our WHU Campus Düsseldorf. The evening was organized by the Institute of Management Accounting and Control (IMC) and the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA), the world’s leading, largest professional body of management accountants.

After the welcoming remarks by IMC director Prof. Dr. Utz Schäffer and CIMA’s Associate Director, Europe, Jakub Bejnarowicz, CIMA President Steve Swientozielskyj spoke on “5 things to make you a better business partner”. In his keynote, he gave insight into the “human bit” of disruptive change. The panel discussion “Business partnering in a digital age and its impact on the role of the controller" then shed light on the new role of the controller. Utz Schäffer, Steve Swientozielskyj, Edyta Zamojska (Director Finance and Controlling, MANN+HUMMEL Group), and Arkadiusz Wieczorek (Product Cost Controlling Manager, Japan Tobacco International Germany GmbH) focused on the challenges ahead. The panel discussion was followed by a celebratory cocktail in honor of CIMA’s 100th birthday.
