Course content
This course provides the students with an understanding of the logistics and supply chain functions of companies and how they interrelate with other business functions. Further, insights to the global business context for which today’s supply chains need to be designed are provided. The course aims at giving an overview over relevant topics and basic concepts in logistics and supply chain management. The course will specifically discuss following topics:
- Foundations
- Transportation
- Warehousing & Inventory Management
- Distribution
- Logistics Service Providers

Learning outcomes
The course focuses on the following learning objectives:
- Understand the role of logistics and SCM for value and competitive advantage
- Understand logistics and supply chain functions of companies and how they interrelate with other functions
- Understand fundamental concepts that underline SCM
- Assessing different strategies firms can follow in the context of logistics and SCM and the need to align functional strategies
- See how supply chains of tomorrow need to be designed
- Transfer learned concepts to practical problems
Literature
In the course there will be two types of readings: read and prepare readings, and basic readings. An example of read and prepare reading is the article:Fisher (1997): What’s the right supply chain for your product?,Harvard Business Review, pp. 105-116.Basic readings are mostly based on the book of Chopra and Meindl (2015): Supply Chain Management, global edition. (ISBN-10: 1292093560). The full list of readings will be provided to the students before the sessions.
Learningmethods
The course applies different methods to provide students knowledge and encourage discussion. The lectures contains classical teaching mixed with discussions indicated in the slides. Readings are provided, which not just support the specific lectures' content but provide a bigger picture and enhance the understanding of practical and future challenges. Furthermore to visualize and outline the topics of the course short videos are used. Case studie saim to enable the students to transfer the basic concepts to practical problems.
