Exchange with Henkel

The cooperation with Henkel aims at enhancing the students' practical competence in the field of consumer goods. Numerous activities foster the exchange between Henkel managers and students of all programs:

Practical experience is an integral part of the WHU programs. In internships at Henkel of at least three months students get valuable insights into the various sectors of an innovative and international consumer goods company. As a fully integrated team member the interns support the day-to-day business and work on projects.

The internship/thesis program with Henkel offers the opportunity to combine a research project with practical experience. The topics which are mutually assessed by WHU professors and mentors at Henkel will be presented  in January.

Every year in early summer, the Henkel Center for Consumer Goods organizes a roundtable for interns, managers and mentors of Henkel, including several WHU alumni, which offers all participants the opportunity to get to know each other and exchange experiences away from the daily office routine.

In 2015 and 2017 selected students had the great opportunity to meet two top managers of Henkel AG & Co. KGaA for a breakfast on the WHU campus in Vallendar. Kathrin Menges, CHRO, and Carsten Knobel, CFO, provided valuable insights into current challenges in the consumer goods market in general and at Henkel. In a lively exhcange with the participants, they also talked about their own career paths and personal experiences.  


Responsibility from day one

Apart from supporting the Recruiting and Employer Branding Team at Henkel AG & Co. KGaA in their day-to-day business, I was in charge of an exciting and comprehensive project called “CTF Cyber Security Challenge”. From the very beginning I was given a lot of responsibility and trust while the demands on my independence, team working capacity as well as the quality of my work were high. Besides the varying and challenging tasks I really appreciated working in a very young and dynamic team. My colleagues and supervisors met me with openness and competence and were always willing to support me with the project. Their attitude represents the general mentality and working atmosphere at Henkel. Working as an intern in Human Resources allowed me to get manifold insights into the working environment of many colleagues in different departments. The 4-month internship offered me the opportunity to get to know Henkel in depth as a company and employer which I can recommend without any reservation."

First-hand insights

"As an intern and bachelor thesis student in the international marketing department for consumer adhesives at Henkel, I got the chance to use prior learned concepts from my studies in a real-life context. During the research for my bachelor thesis, I could access a wide variety of resources from Henkel and received great support from my WHU supervisor in close collaboration with my Henkel mentor. Besides the daily interaction with marketing professionals and product experts, I could gain first-hand insights for my thesis during local store visits.

Working self-determined in an international environment, dealing with relevant business challenges and questioning the status-quo of the industry was a valuable experience on a personal and professional level for me. During my internship, I enjoyed learning also about the other Henkel business areas and being a part of a strong intern community at Henkel with the possibility to participate in various events. All in all, the thesis project was a successful conclusion of the bachelor studies at WHU for me."

Focus on innovation and creativity

„As an intern in International Marketing at Henkel, I had exciting and varied tasks and was assigned responsibilitiy from the very beginning. Amongst others, I have organized the building of a new website for Henkel's brand Somat and actively participated in the new packaging design. Exciting insights

"After having experienced the International Marketing Unit (IMU) of the Laundry & Homecare Division during the Master course “The Product Manager’s Toolkits & Interfaces” of the Henkel Center for Consumer Goods, I decided to apply for an internship in this fascinating department. I was assigned to the category Hand Dishwash (HDW), which includes the brands Pril, Mir or Nelsen, and found an extremely exciting task field in a great working environment. The IMU is responsible for the strategic alignment of all marketing activities in the more than 50 HDW countries. As an intern you thus get many exciting insights in various areas such as the organization of a holistic advertising campaign, market research as well as innovation processes or sales planning. The internship at Henkel was the perfect enhancement of my academic knowledge and I can warmly recommend this practical experience."
