Dr. Philipp Bierl

„Family Equity and Direct Entrepreneurial Investments in Entrepreneurial Families”, graduated in June 2020

In his dissertation, Philipp investigated the generation mechanisms of family equity, the emergence of direct entrepreneurial investments in entrepreneurial families and their significance for transgenerational entrepreneurship, both in family businesses and after the sale. As part of his study, he and his team interviewed 109 entrepreneurial families about their entrepreneurial activities in the family business and their single family offices. During his doctorate at the Institute for Family Business & Mittelstand, Philipp was also scientific co-project manager for Single Family Offices. He himself has an entrepreneurial background and has been working as an independent management consultant since 2014. Prior to this, he gained professional experience at a leading international management consultancy in the field of corporate finance advisory and mergers & acquisitions in Munich and during his studies in investment & asset management in Frankfurt am Main, Hamburg and New York as well as in private wealth management in Zurich.

In 2015, Philipp completed his part-time studies in Mergers & Acquisitions (LL.M.) at the Frankfurt School of Finance & Management with distinction. Prior to that, he studied international business administration with a focus on finance and strategy in Munich, Paris and London, which he completed with a Master of Arts and a Master of Science above average.

Philipp presents his research results at international conferences such as the European Academy of Management, the International Family Enterprise Research Academy and the Babson College Entrepreneurship Research Conference. In addition, Philipp is a lecturer at various universities, such as the Frankfurt School of Finance & Management, the ISM International School of Management and the Fresenius University of Applied Sciences. In addition to speaking at international academic conferences, he has been a speaker in various practice-oriented formats, such as the Deutsche Bank Next Generation Initiative and the M&A & Private Equity Conference in Frankfurt am Main. Philipp has published the results of his research in peer-reviewed professional journals, academic books and practice-oriented publications. His research focuses on family & value creation strategies of entrepreneurial families, the importance of family governance and family equity generation mechanisms in a transgenerational context. Philipp is married and has three children.
