The Henkel Center for Consumer Goods (HCCG) functions as a bridge between science and practice and pursues two main objectives. On the one hand, it promotes practical research in the consumer goods sector, particularly in strategy and marketing, sustainability, leadership, family business, innovation, negotiations, and procurement. On the other hand, it fosters students' practical skills in consumer goods management.

About us

The Henkel Center for Consumer Goods (HCCG) is a cooperation between WHU – Otto Beisheim School of Management and Henkel AG & Co. KGaA. It was founded jointly by WHU and Henkel over 15 years ago and has since formed the basis for an intensive and trusting exchange in the consumer goods sector. Research and teaching activities are developed and realized together, thus ensuring an effective transfer of knowledge between science and practice.

Julia Hengstmann
Bachelor of Science 2018
"Working at Henkel as an intern was a great experience for me I really enjoyed and benefitted from! First, I learned how to put myself into the shoes of the customers and shareholders to better understand the industry dynamics and strategic value creation opportunities. Also, my supervisor encouraged me to bring in my own ideas, to challenge myself and to take over responsibility on a daily basis. Finally, Henkel has a unique global team and culture which is characterized by a great team spirit and collaboration. In summary, I can highly recommend Henkel for an internship."
Matthias Heinrich Morales
Bachelor of Science 2019
"I can highly recommend the joint Henkel-WHU thesis program as it allows to combine academic research with practical applications while having a real impact. During my time at Henkel, I was part of a multinational team based in different countries examining new business opportunities. I felt part of the Henkel community from day one and received close mentorship and continuous feedback. At the end of the working period, the team asked me to present my recommendation and results showcasing Henkel’s open, supportive, and impact-driven culture."
Philipp Zinnenlauf
Bachelor of Science 2019
"As an intern in the Global Strategy & Marketing Group Adhesive Technologies, I have been able to experience an insightful and interesting internship. I was considered as a fully-fledged team-member with huge responsibilities in terms of own projects and project workstreams. In this context, I have been responsible for improving the strategy tracking process of the strategic agenda, analyzing the progress of key strategic initiatives for top management reporting and providing ad-hoc support to a Henkel Board member."
Julia Domagala
Bachelor of Science 2018
"Apart from supporting the Recruiting and Employer Branding Team in their day-to-day business, I was in charge of an exciting and comprehensive project called “CTF Cyber Security Challenge”. From the very beginning I was given a lot of responsibility and trust. I really appreciated working in a very young and dynamic team. My colleagues and supervisors met me with openness and competence and were always willing to support me with the project. Their attitude represents the general mentality and working atmosphere at Henkel."
Simon Heesen
Bachelor of Science 2018
"As an intern and bachelor thesis student in the international marketing department for consumer adhesives at Henkel, I got the chance to use prior learned concepts from my studies in a real-life context. During the research for my bachelor thesis, I could access a wide variety of resources from Henkel and received great support from my WHU supervisor in close collaboration with my Henkel mentor. Besides the daily interaction with marketing professionals and product experts, I could gain first-hand insights for my thesis during local store visits."

The collaboration with Henkel

1 | Practice-oriented cooperation formats in teaching

The successful collaboration between WHU and Henkel is characterized by various teaching cooperation formats, which promote students' practical skills in consumer goods management.

Students regularly have the opportunity to meet top Henkel executives and gain in-depth insights into current company developments, strategic directions, and career opportunities. In inspiring events, for example, with Carsten Knobel (CEO of Henkel) and Töre Birol (Corporate Vice President Global Customer Excellence HCB), students could already learn first-hand about personal experiences and individual career paths and, at the same time, gain valuable impulses for their professional future. The events occur both on the WHU and Henkel campuses.

The HCCG lectures emphasize both theoretical fundamentals and their practical relevance and application. The strong practical orientation results, in particular, from the experienced Henkel managers who are regular guests in the lectures for presentations and case studies. Students gain in-depth insights into current challenges and developments in the consumer goods and retail industry, discuss strategies with the experts, and develop and present their solutions.

Practical experience is an essential part of the WHU programs. The internships at Henkel, which last at least 3 months, provide students at an early stage with in-depth insights into the various departments of an innovative and international company in the consumer goods industry. Students work as valued team members in day-to-day business and on projects.

As part of the internship/thesis program, students can combine an internship with a thesis at Henkel and, thus, link scientific questions with practical insights. The topics agreed between WHU professors and Henkel departments, as well as the application process, are introduced between December and February.

WHU students can find information on career options and application processes at Henkel on the intranet (link to Handshake).

2 | Cross-functional management research in the consumer goods industry

The HCCG focuses on cross-functional management research in the consumer goods sector. The research projects are performed both by WHU chairs and students and concentrate on the following key areas:

  • Strategy and Marketing
  • Sustainability
  • Leadership
  • Family Business
  • Innovation
  • Negotiations and procurement

As a strong practical partner, Henkel supports research activities in determining topics and collecting and analyzing data. Using the latest research methods and a sound theoretical basis, the HCCG thus achieves publications in renowned scientific and practical journals.
