Postgraduate and Postdoctorate Degrees

As a research-oriented educational institution and one of the leading European research facilities in the area of business, WHU - Otto Beisheim School of Management has a particular responsibility for the promotion of young academics. We fulfill this responsibility through our great commitment to the training of young people in the field of business administration.

WHU has been authorized since 1986 to grant postgraduate degrees. Since then, we have bestowed more than 500 candidates the title Doctor of Economic Sciences (Dr. rer. pol.). At present, there are approx. 260 external and internal doctoral students undergoing our demanding Postgraduate Program and conducting research in all areas of business at an international level. This makes WHU one of the leading educational institutions in the German-speaking world for young people in the field of business administration.

The doctoral program tends likewise to doctoral students who intend to work (again) in practical fields and to those who aim an academic career after their doctorate. Within the doctoral program at the WHU, the participants will receive an integrative perception with regard to economic and business problems and will be able to develop complexe strategies. They will be prepared to work afterwards within internationally operating organizations and a global working environment. In addition, they will learn to analyse and structure complexe facts and circumstances, to priorise issues as regards content and time, to integrate various perspectives and to derivate and to implement solution alternatives. Another core educational objective within the doctoral program at WHU is the student's ability to develop research results and to publish them in international, high-ranking peer-reviewed journals.

The area of post-doctorate qualification also shows the excellent research climate at WHU. Since the founding of the university, 24 young academics have completed their post-doctorate qualification at WHU, and have been appointed to well-known research institutions in Germany and abroad, including the Humboldt Universität in Berlin, Justus-Liebig-Universität in Gießen and the University of Bern.

In order to grant access to research and teaching for young scientists with extraordinary doctorates, WHU offers the positions of assistant professors. This enables the candidates to directly qualify for the vocation of a professor, without passing the habilitation process.

Currently, WHU is employing 13 assistant professors as lecturers for a period of up to six years. During this time they offer their own courses in all programs while carrying out their own independent research.

WHU’s introduction of the assistant professorship supports the research orientation of the university and promotes quality education for talented young scientists. Assistant professors therefore work in very close cooperation with the university’s chairs, centers and other professors.
