Research Philosophy

The high level of research capability at our university is the result of adherence to three key research principles: Quality, Internationality and Practical and Academic Relevance. Only the interplay between these principles can create excellence in research. Both the WHU as an institution and its individual researchers consistently hold fast to these principles.

“Class, not Mass” is the motto followed by our faculty. Consequently, our research results are regularly published in leading international journals.

The long-term preservation of our research quality is of particular importance to us. This is why the WHU faculty members are in vivid contact and exchange with the research community, e. g. upon international conferences. They also accept invitations from internationally renowned universities and attend their research colloquia.

WHU is the only German university with membership in the German Research Foundation (Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft - DFG), which also requires us to comply with strict academic principles. We therefore have permanently established a commission to safeguard good scientific practice at WHU.

Excellent research can essentially only be achieved in an international context. For this reason, WHU upholds intensive contact with internationally recognized educational and research institutions, such as the Kellogg School of Management, Northwestern University in Evanston Illinois or the China Europe International Business School (CEIBS) in Shanghai.

The ongoing academic exchange with our almost 200 partner universities is maintained through research exchanges of individual faculty members as well as the presentation of new theoretical discoveries at international academic conferences.

Economic and business studies research should – in addition to advancing theory - ideally convey practical value added. In line with this conviction, we place great emphasis on the practical relevance of our research activities. Our researchers work in close cooperation with companies, examining practical issues from a theoretical perspective. The nexus achieved between the business and academic worlds is manifest, among other things, in the WHU research centers, which are sponsored by leading companies.

Our research results are also directly incorporated in the programs offered to our students. Intensive cooperation between the individual university groups ensures that the content of the programs is constantly updated to reflect the latest theoretical discoveries.
