Studying German / West-European Industrial Competitiveness
As part of the MBA course "OIDD-680 - Operations Strategy Practicum" taught by Professor Morris A. Cohen from The Wharton School, a European Study Tour was organized by the Chair of Production Management in the years 2016 to 2019.
Professor Arnd Huchzermeier and the program manager for the Industrial Excellence Award Germany accompanied the group each year. Over the time span of 5 days, 10 operationally leading companies were visited: usually, the head of the business unit explained the company’s operation strategy first and then a tour of a representative production or service unit followed.
Students were tasked to write a mini-case study on a company of their choice and thus prepared ahead of time for the visit; during the on-site visit, they then had a chance to raise key questions. The final report was shared with the hosts to facilitate international benchmarking and learning.
A welcome session on Sundays and a farewell dinner on Friday evening complemented the program. This exclusive event was limited to 25 pre-registered attendees. The feedback of this unique learning experience in practice was very positive.
Industrial Excellence Award Conferences
Over the years, the IEA competition has moved away from a focus on France and Germany only to a focus on all countries of Western Europe. Consequently, we changed from collaborating with national media partners to business schools as hosts of the annual award ceremony.
