A safe place to study – WHU supports Ukraine

The WHU Community shows Courage & Commitment

After Russia’s cold-blooded attack on Ukraine, WHU, which stands for freedom and democracy, would like to extend its sympathies to all those affected. With its two campuses located in Western Europe, far from the directly affected areas, WHU continues to be a safe place to receive an excellent education in management. The WHU community and WHU as an institution have taken action to support both the refugees and the people still residing in Ukraine.

Scholarships for Ukrainians

WHU is offering scholarships for all study programs, as well as assistance with living costs, to qualified Ukrainian citizens who have fled the war in their home country. This opportunity has been made possible through a joint effort between WHU, the alumni organization In Praxi, Brain Capital, and the Ringbeck Foundation. Applying outside of the standard admissions schedule is also possible.

“We are aware that, for many displaced students, it may be difficult to think long-term while abroad,” noted Dean of WHU Professor Markus Rudolf, addressing the high level of uncertainty the candidates may feel and expressing concern for their friends and families. “Despite this—or perhaps precisely because of this—we wish to empower them and prove that there is still hope, even in difficult times.”

For further information on WHU’s study programs, the application process, and the Ukraine Scholarship Fund, please consult the program pages and reach out to their respective management teams.

Additionally, the DAAD National Academic Contact Point Ukraine, sponsored by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research of Germany, offers comprehensive reference material (in Deutsch, English, and Українська) covering all topics relevant to residency in Germany and continued education for Ukrainian nationals displaced by the war.

Lights for Peace in Europe

As a community comprising students, faculty, staff, alumni, and many other stakeholders, WHU is taking a stand for European values and showing respect for personal freedom.

As an expression of their support for the Ukrainian people, in March of 2022, WHU lit up the Burgplatz in Vallendar in their country’s national colors.

WHUSH and SensAbility collecting donations

Using the platform GoFundMe, two student initiatives, WHUSH – WHU Students Help and SensAbility, are collecting funds for Ukrainian refugees. The funds are donated to Caritas; as of April 21, 2022, this action has raised €3,383.

Alliance4Ukraine was founded by the non-profit organization ProjectTogether and is envisioned as a coordinative coalition between civic organizations, foundations, state institutions, and companies. It is supported, both personally and institutionally, by various WHU alumni and university-affiliated start-ups (e.g., Imagine Ukraine and Scout 24). The alliance’s goal is not necessarily to generate new offers of relief. Rather, they seek to coordinate existing initiatives and network with their respective agents. As opposed to helping in individual cases, their core objective is to offer support on a grander scale and achieve the highest level of efficiency possible.

To date, Alliance4Ukraine is coordinating relief efforts in several areas, including refugee housing, language support, and ensuring that basic needs are met. Additionally, the group is asking for donations from companies, foundations, and associations to its Alliance4Ukraine fund, which will provide short-term financial relief to organizations that are overloaded and whose solutions are sorely needed.

Alliance4Ukraine has a considerable need for volunteers who can contribute their professional expertise and management skills to many branches of the operation. This need not be on an hourly basis. In fact, full-time commitments are encouraged, whenever possible. Above all else, they will be expected to coordinate offers of relief from different companies, link these to the most appropriate areas of need, and act as the interfacing agent between civil society and state-run institutions. They will also highly appreciate participants making use of their own contacts and network to ensure that the necessary resources can be accessed as painlessly as possible.

Those who wish to offer their support, as well as those aware of companies that would like to aid the refugees, can contact Nils Omland, ProjectTogether representative and doctoral student at WHU, at nomland(at)projecttogether.org or sign up on the following pages:

Student Initiative – “We Help Ukraine – WHU”

In light of the acute need in Ukraine, some students of the BSc 2023 cohort quickly sprang to action and organized a relief transport action in cooperation with Helping Hands Eltville. The items collected, such as non-perishable foods, hygiene products, and medicine, found grateful recipients in the small Polish town of Ustryzki Dolne. Before the students headed back home, they were told by the local Ukrainian organizers that more help was urgently needed and that a general willingness to donate was waning.

We Help Ukraine – WHU is therefore calling for continued donations and will support the Ukrainian Student League in its future relief efforts.
