WHU Professor Gives Advice in Bundestag Hearing

Christian Hagist on the liquidity of the statutory pension insurance

Professor Christian Hagist, Chair of Economic and Social Policy at WHU – Otto Beisheim School of Management, was invited as an expert before the German Bundestag's (German parliament’s) Labor and Social Affairs Committee on June 20, 2022. In the public hearing, the committee members discussed the question of the extent to which an increase in the minimum reserve in the statutory pension insurance would be necessary to ensure their liquidity. Various options were discussed. However, Christian Hagist, an economist and expert on pension policy, pointed out that the German pension insurance system was currently well equipped with reserves and that bottlenecks in liquidity will not occur until 2025 at the earliest. In this context, he raised the question of whether there was currently a need for political action, or “whether this can be negotiated as part of an overall package together with other adjustments to pension policy later." As an expert for pension policy, Professor Christian Hagist is regularly invited to hearings of the Bundestag and asked for his assessment.
