According to reports, the ailing department store chain Galeria Karstadt Kaufhof is once again negotiating with the German government for state aid of 200 million euros. Business Insider spoke with Prof. Dr. Martin Fassnacht about this topic. Prof. Fassnacht is sure that another loan would not be a wise decision. "It would be wasted money that the state will never receive back," he says. "In five to 10 years at the latest, GKK will no longer exist," Prof. Fassnacht says. He adds, "I don't see the USP (unique selling point) of GKK as an entire company, nor in the individual product segments." Be it Douglas in the beauty segment or MediamarktSaturn in the electronics segment: In each area, GKK now has strong (online) competition that is significantly better positioned.
