16th WHU Campus for Controlling

Sustainable, digital, and flexible

This year's WHU Campus for Controlling, which after two years of virtual conferences, finally took place on the Vallendar campus again on September 9, 2022, revolved around three central challenges currently driving the controlling community: sustainability, digitization, and Beyond Budgeting.

Professor Utz Schäffer, who co-hosted the conference with Professor Marko Reimer, gave an opening presentation entitled "Is Your Performance Management Ready for a Vuca World?" on Beyond Budgeting and dynamic resource allocation as controlling solutions to meet the demands of the VUCA world.

The presentation by Alexander Lind, Head of Group Controlling & Risk Management at Merck KGaA, also dealt with Beyond Budgeting. Alexander Lind reported on the development of corporate steering at Merck KGaA in regards to Beyond Budgeting.

Mark Frese, CFO of Hapag-Lloyd AG, provided insights in his keynote into the sustainability strategy of the transport and logistics company, which, in addition to decarbonization, is increasingly integrating the use of green financing into its sustainability strategy.

Nico Hoffmann, Head of "Digital and Analytics Transformation Program" at Telekom Deutschland GmbH, spoke about digitizing the finance function. His keynote focused on how forecasts generated by artificial intelligence (AI) can be used as a basis for planning and business management.

Dr. Rolf Hellermann, Chief Financial Officer of Bertelsmann SE & Co. KGaA, gave the closing keynote of the WHU Campus for Controlling. He explained the strategic decisions in portfolio management and controlling that shaped the transformation in recent years as part of a review of the group transformation at Bertelsmann from 2011 to 2021.

Many thanks to the keynote speakers and all participants for this lively and inspiring conference. We look forward to welcoming participants back to the WHU campus in Vallendar for the 17th WHU Campus for Controlling on September 8, 2023!
