Policy Debate on Future Financing of Care Provision

On Wednesday, May 10, 2023, experts, including Professor Christian Hagist, holder of the Chair of Economic and Social Policy at WHU - Otto Beisheim School of Management, gave their views on the draft of the "Act to Support and Relieve Long-Term Care" at a hearing of the Bundestag's Health Committee. They recommend that the German government make significant improvements to the latest care reform and call for a fundamental reform of the system in order to be able to finance care sustainably. 

Professor Hagist emphasized that although the increase in contribution rates is necessary due to demographic developments, it does not represent a sustainable solution. Rather, he said, systemic changes are needed that include: 
1) an emphasis on partial coverage,
2) greater funding in the system, and
3) a societal debate on options for private provision.
