BSc/MSc Exchange

WHU is proud to welcome many international Bachelor and Master exchange students to Vallendar each year.

Vallendar is located in the Upper Middle Rhine Valley, a 65km stretch of the 1,230km Rhine River. With its castles, historic towns, towering vineyards, and steep slopes, this section of the river has been awarded UNESCO world heritage site status. Major cities are dotted along the banks, and Koblenz marks the meeting of the rivers Rhine and Moselle. Perfectly placed, Vallendar and its surrounding area offer plenty to see and do.

Courses and workload at WHU

Each semester at WHU is divided into two quarters, with most courses spanning over just one.  Additionally, WHU offers compact courses with a duration of just two or three full days. There are different methods of assessment including exams, papers, and presentations, for example.

100% of courses in the undergraduate and graduate programs are taught in English, with 20% of the undergraduate courses also taught in German. We consider the regular workload for exchange students as 5 to 7 courses per semester. However, you should always discuss your choice of courses with your home university to make sure that your semester abroad will be validated!

Generally, an undergraduate course has a total of 24 contact hours, whilst a graduate course comprises 30 contact hours. WHU awards ECTS credits, with 1 ECTS credit equal to 25-30 hours of overall workload,  including lectures, group work, case studies, and exam preparation.

You can find some information regarding previoulsy offered courses in the online course guide.

Final course selection and course registration can only be made once the term has started at WHU. During the mandatory orientation days, there will be a separate information session dedicated to this topic. You will have access to a detailed schedule of classes and exams upon arrival at WHU, which will be available in our intranet. You will receive your login data during orientation.

WHU applies grading on a curve system whilst assessing the exams for each class. That means that grades are distributed based on the performance of the class as a whole. Grades at WHU are based on the following scale:

1.0 to 1.5 - VERY GOOD
1.6 to 2.5 - GOOD
2.6 to 3.5 - SATISFACTORY
3.6 to 4.0 - SUFFICIENT
5.0 - FAIL

Download the Check List

Please take care of visa matters as early as possible to start your semester abroad without any problems. As you must apply for the visa from your home country (or country of residence), we suggest starting this process at least two months before your departure– visas are never issued in Germany! Please contact your local German Consulate or visit their website to find out if you need a visa before entering Germany/Europe. You can find a current overview on the website of the Federal Foreign Office

The visa will usually be issued for three months, regardless of the actual length of your stay. Once you have entered Germany with a visa, you can apply for a residence permit covering the entirety of your stay.

If you have to apply for a visa, please make sure to apply for a student visa, as a tourist visa is not valid for entering Germany to study. Tourist visas cannot be changed into student visas afterwards!

All Non-EU citizens staying in Germany for more than three months must officially obtain a residence permit after entering Germany. You will need to apply for your student residence permit at the local foreign office in Koblenz after your arrival. The International Relations Office will assist you in this matter and will inform you in detail about the process during orientation. To save time, we kindly ask you to gather the required documents before you leave your home country. Before booking your flight, please contact the IRO for information regarding the duration of your residence permit.

You need to bring the following documents for your Residence Permit application:

  • One biometric passport-sized photo
  • Valid passport photocopy (just the page with the photo and personal data – in case you have a visa also a photocopy of your visa page)
  • Photocopy of WHU Acceptance Letter
  • Photocopy (or print out) of recently-dated proof of sufficient funds (at least €934 per month) in English or German (bank statement, account statement, certificate of scholarship and/or parental guarantee including your parents' bank statement)
  • Photocopy of proof of valid health insurance in English or German

We recommend all non-EU citizens who do not need a visa to enter Germany to apply for your residence permit only after your arrival in Germany. If you already apply for your residence permit in your home country/country of residence, you will have to apply again at our local foreign office in Koblenz, which will result in additional costs.

Internships in Germany

Exchange students can do an internship after attending WHU. For all non-EU citizens, it is important that the internship is legally permitted.

Option 1 (spring semester only):
Students staying at WHU during the spring semester can do a full-time internship of up to 120 days within their residence permit (when the permit is obtained via WHU). The spring semester officially runs from early January to end August but classes already finish in early May, giving you time to do an internship or travel afterwards until the end of August. No extra paperwork is required.

Option 2 (spring and fall semester):
Students joining WHU during the fall or spring semester can work up to 240 days part-time within the residence permit (when obtained via WHU). No extra paperwork is required.

Option 3:
Students joining us in either semester can do an internship that is required for their studies and relates to their field of study. This is considered student employment. You have to inform the foreign office if this will involve an extension of your stay. In some cases, the German Federal Employment Agency (ZAV) must be involved.

Option 4:
In all other cases you must apply for a work permit. Be sure to apply for your work permit as soon as you get confirmation from the company you will work for! The application process may take up to six weeks.

Working / doing an internship is normally not allowed within the scope of a visa – if you have a visa that already covers your whole stay in Germany AND you would like to work / do an internship during that period of time, you will probably have to apply for a residence permit (or work permit – please see different options above) in addition to the visa. Please contact your exchange coordinator at WHU if this is the case for you, as we can give you an update about the most recent options.

For additional information about the necessary steps, please contact the International Relations Office. More information on this topic will also be included in your welcome package, which you receive upon arrival at WHU.

As an exchange student, you will have access to our Career Center and its events. Take the chance and get connected!

The German health care system prides itself on being one of the best in the world. There is an extensive network of hospitals and doctors covering even the remotest areas of Germany. Medical facilities are equipped with the latest technology, and the national health insurance system offers nearly all medical treatments and prescriptions. When living in Germany, you are obliged to prove that you have sufficient medical coverage.

Therefore, upon arrival at WHU, all exchange students must provide proof of valid health insurance. The following aspects must be covered by your health insurance and be mentioned explicitly in your insurance documents:

  • The period: Your entire stay in Germany has to be covered
  • The region: Germany has to be covered
  • Emergencies have to be covered
  • All medical expenses have to be covered

Please note that health insurance with full coverage for sickness, emergencies, and all medical expenses is mandatory for all exchange students in Germany.

European citizens who are traveling or living within the European Union are eligible to receive a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) from their health insurance company in their home country. The EHIC simplifies the procedure when receiving medical assistance during a stay in a EU Member State and is sufficient as proof of insurance.

Non-EU citizens without an EHIC need to bring a confirmation letter written in English or German from their insurance provider. This confirmation letter must include all aspects mentioned above (period, region, emergency coverage and coverage for all medical expenses) as well as your name (i.e., the name of a parent or another family member is not sufficient). If any of these five aspects are not mentioned in your proof of health insurance, the authorities will not accept it.

If you do not have health insurance or if the aspects mentioned above are not or cannot be included in the confirmation letter from your home insurance company, you have to purchase (additional) health insurance. The International Relations Office will assist you in this matter.

Currency

The official currency used in Germany is Euro (€)

Credit Cards

MasterCard, Visa and American Express are usually accepted at major hotels. However, they are often not accepted at restaurants, supermarkets, or other stores. ATMs are easily accessible throughout Germany, and you should have no problem accessing your home credit or debit account.

Transferring money

In Germany, the common way to transfer money is bank transfers ("Überweisung"), standing orders ("Dauerauftrag") and direct debits ("Lastschrift"). It is very uncommon to write out a check to pay for your rent.

Banks

Usually, to open an account you need:

  • Passport
  • Any document with your home address (the best will be any of the documents you received from WHU showing your home address)
  • Proof of legal residence (you get this by registering at the town hall) – with an address in Vallendar or Düsseldorf
  • E-mail-account

The procedure at the bank will be conducted in German. If you are an exchange student in Vallendar, you can bring the necessary documents to the branch of Sparkasse bank in Vallendar, and we will arrange an appointment.

IMPORTANT:

Before leaving Germany, you have to close the bank account. Just go to the bank a few days before your departure and tell them that you will be leaving. You must not have any account movements four days before closing the account (which means that you should not use your bank account card).

Concerning the cost of living, Germany lies within the EU average and is therefore not excessively expensive.

We estimate that your living expenses will be between €800  and €1200 per month. Your budget will mostly depend on your accommodation and how you manage your free time (e.g., traveling, eating out, concerts, using sports facilities, visiting museums and clubs).

Here is an example of an average exchange student's monthly budget:

  • Accommodation: between €400 and €650
  • Mobile Phone: €30
  • Food: €200
  • Laundry: €20
  • Local transportation to Koblenz: €70 (monthly bus ticket)
  • Health Insurance: mandatory for medical expenses and emergencies (approx. €50 if acquired in Germany)
  • Miscellaneous (leisure activities): €300

"I had a great experience with my time at WHU. The campus is very tight knit and is located within a wonderful region of Germany. I loved getting to know all of my fellow students and having the opportunity to go to lectures in a foreign country. WHU did a great job integrating me within the campus and with my fellow exchange students, some of whom became very good friends. The flexible schedule of campus life also gave me time to explore Europe and travel to many new countries and cities. I would recommend WHU to anyone passionate about Business that wants to spend time in a place that may be outside their comfort zone."

"Being on exchange at WHU Germany has been an amazing experience. Being on an Erasmus exchange in my bachelors opened up so many opportunities to immerse myself in Germany’s rich culture as well as the WHU community. I have met many passionate students who are excited about their careers and have an amazing college spirit unlike anything I’ve ever seen before.

From the parties to the amazing networking events, and organised trips, there is so much to see and learn. The students and staff are all incredibly helpful and considerate, and the college spares no expense in helping you integrate and feel more at home during your time here. The wide range of classes have a focus on practical teaching that leave you with a chance for skill development as well as subject matter knowledge. One of the highlights of my exchange experience was the incredible boat party, which was an opportunity to meet and socialise with many students from different backgrounds.

Overall, this exchange program has been a great opportunity for personal growth, learning, and cultural immersion. I am grateful for the support from both Trinity College Dublin and WHU that made this opportunity possible. I have gained a greater appreciation for different cultures and a better understanding of the global community, and I would highly recommend an exchange experience to any student looking to broaden their horizons."

"When I decided to spend my fall semester abroad at WHU, I wasn't quite sure what to expect. However, I was eager to embrace all the new experiences that awaited me, and my time in Vallendar exceeded all my expectations. The first few weeks were so incredible that I decided to apply to stay for the winter semester too. Over both semesters, I had the opportunity to connect with people from all over the world, immerse myself in German culture, and visit over 13 countries.

One of the things that impressed me most about WHU was the engaging courses, seminars, and other events and parties that were always happening on campus. I never felt bored or uninspired during my time there. The whole experience left me feeling more confident, independent, and culturally aware.

Overall, I would highly recommend WHU to anyone looking for a truly life-changing study abroad experience. It's a place where you can grow both academically and personally, make new friends from all over the globe, and have unforgettable adventures along the way."
Julianna Totoni
Schulich School of Business

"Choosing to go on exchange to WHU was by far one of the best decisions I have made. It felt as though we were immediately welcomed into the community with open arms, with anything we needed already in place. I loved having the chance to meet amazing people from around the world, practice my language skills, immerse myself in German culture and benefit from engaging classes with passionate professors. I truly made memories to last a lifetime and count myself lucky having been able to spend an amazing semester at WHU surrounded by incredible people. I felt right at home at WHU and if I was offered the chance to do it all over again, I would choose WHU a thousand times over."
Elena Rossi
Università Bocconi
Italy
"The WHU spirit and pride is something hard to find anywhere else, and in Vallendar there is such a special community. I enjoyed every day spent here, and at the end of this experience I would like to not go back home. It was an amazing time; people are very friendly and always ready to help and include you in their parties! There are always lots of events and different things to do; my favorite was the Tauschie dinner and the Tauschie Tuesday, where I had the opportunity to feel like a full-time student. The quality of the lessons is very high and professors are very prepared and ready to answer any questions. There’s nothing I don’t like about WHU and about the time spent here. I really hope I can come back to Vallendar one day and visit all the amazing people I know here!"
Ryan Tran
Indiana University
USA
"Studying abroad, ultimately, was the bridge between the familiar and the unknown. It was suspended by two starkly different phases – dependence and independence, and work and play. WHU provided a smooth gradient between these two periods. Coming from Indiana, I enjoyed the time spent with my peers. Although I savor these friendships, all our activities were shared: We attended the same classes, enjoyed the same local activities, and ate at the same restaurants. And there’s nothing wrong with that. However, going out of the country was the perfect opportunity to gain a cosmopolitan outlook through the people around me. It was a way to live out other upbringings through the experiences I would share with new friends.

The VIP and WHU buddy program stroke the perfect balance between my professional development and cultural immersion. These programs introduced me to events such as the New Year and Private Equity finance conferences while also organized outings such as the Tauschie dinner for social support. Furthermore, pairings with the upperclassmen who were familiar with the town for daily chop-ups were a great way to integrate and create new experiences with newly formed friends."
Seira Sawa
Waseda University
Japan
"I have spent 9 months at WHU as an exchange student from Japan. This exchange program gave me special memories with international friends from all over the world. I met new people here through the Tauschie and International events which helped me to expand my perspective. Also, I really liked the courses. There are many opportunities where we can output things that we learn, and during group work we can cooperate with other students who have different cultural backgrounds. Germany is far away from Japan, and I hadn't been to Europe, so most of the things that I saw here were new to me. I really enjoyed this adventure at WHU and I would like to recommend you to come here and enjoy a memorable time in the international environment."
Quynh Chau Nguyen
Foreign Trade University
Vietnam
"All of the courses of WHU are insightful and diverse. There are also many interesting seminars and events that are both academic and socially beneficial. I personally enjoy its finance courses, which are up-to-date and the professors are extremely experienced. WHU is definitely one of the best business schools and I feel really lucky to have this experience."
Sarah Moyer
University of Kansas
USA
"Studying abroad at WHU was the best decision I could have made for my exchange semester. I was here for a short time of four months, but during that time I never had a dull moment: there were always events to attend, networking opportunities, and places to see. Vallendar is a small town, but in so, I was able to truly connect with the people here and create life-long friendships.

The courses here were unique in the way that group work is encouraged in nearly every course and the competitive culture pushed you to present your very best. I was welcomed in my group projects by the German students, and they gave me insight on their favorite foods to try, events at WHU, and more. I often stayed late with them enjoying tea or trying a currywurst for the first time as they explained to me various parts about the culture in WHU and Germany.

Because of the flexible schedule for courses, I was able to travel to seven different countries and countless towns and cities in Germany. My independence has group immensely as I’ve learned to navigate in foreign countries. I didn’t expect my goodbye to Germany to be this hard, but I’m endlessly grateful for this experience."
Tarik Fassi-Fihri
Audencia Business School

"The mantra 'Like there's no tomorrow' has revealed its immense power since my arrival at WHU. It's been an unparalleled journey marked by academic excellence and cultural immersion. The dynamic learning environment, enriched by cutting-edge courses taught by industry leaders, has significantly broadened my academic perspective. Interacting with a diverse cohort of global students has not only expanded my cultural horizons but also sharpened my teamwork and collaboration skills. At WHU, each day holds a special significance, contributing to an unforgettable experience. I am immensely grateful for the incredible people I've met, and the unwavering support provided by the academic staff throughout my stay in Vallendar. This unique environment has not just enriched my academic pursuits but has also contributed profoundly to my personal and professional growth."
Lauren Verkamp
Xavier University
USA
"Being an exchange student at WHU (or a tauschie, as we are called here) has been one of the most exciting, rewarding experiences of my life. Coming into this experience, I was worried about making friends, integrating into the community, and succeeding academically. However, upon my arrival, my fears were quickly eliminated. From the day you arrive in Vallendar, the school is prepared to help you adjust with a myriad of information sessions, parties, planned trips, and so much more.
The setup of classes here makes it incredibly easy to get away for a weekend and see new places. I was able to travel to a different country almost every weekend, which was an incredible way to see the world and experience so many different cultures (and lots of good food!)
Finally, the friends I made here will last a lifetime. Some of the best people I have ever met came from this semester, and though they are spread out all over the world, I know we will keep in touch. Some of us already have international flights books to visit eachother! The integration of exchange students is incredible, and I can guarantee you will come out with unforgettable memories and bonds.
Studying at WHU was truly the best decision I could have made, and Vallendar will forever feel like home. I would strongly encourage anyone to apply, and feel free to reach out to me with any questions!

"My exchange experience at WHU has been transformative and eventful journey that opened doors to a diverse range of cultures and friendships from across the globe. Exploring Germany and Europe with the new connections formed here has served as a huge personal growth for me to step out of my comfort zone. Beyond academics, WHU has also hosted a series of activities such as tours, workshops and parties to create a sense of belonging among us exchangers. These events has provided me opportunities to form new bonds and learn more about Germany. The spirit on the campus and vibes around the town has truly made Vallendar a special place in my heart, and created memories I’ll cherish forever. These experience of exploring new cities, tasting unfamiliar cuisines and embracing different cultures is something I’ll never forget. Proost!"

From the moment you step onto campus, you'll find a supportive environment that values diversity, fosters inclusivity, and celebrates every student's unique perspectives. If you are thinking of spending your semester aboard here, I would recommend it."

"During my time at WHU, I had the incredible opportunity to form strong friendships with amazing people from all over the world. Exploring Vallendar, Koblenz, and nearby cities and countries became even more enjoyable thanks to these connections.
The warm reception, the professionalism of professors, and the valuable real-life insights from guest lectures made my academic experience exceptional.
Additionally, I'm truly grateful for the outstanding integration efforts for exchange students throughout the semester, including parties, events, and tours. These initiatives not only enriched my experience but also provided the perfect backdrop for forming meaningful friendships. WHU has been more than just a learning environment for me, it's also where I found a global community of friends and experiences."

"Studying abroad is a common experience during undergraduate studies in the United States, however, I never had the opportunity to do so. Coming to WHU was an opportunity to finally have this experience. From the moment I came to campus, I felt very welcomed by the MBA program office as well as the other students. The school also provided ample resources to me and the other exchange students to make sure we were comfortable navigating WHU, Düsseldorf, and the surrounding areas. Finally, the classroom experience has been a unique change from my home school, which allowed me to see learning in a new context."

"I chose WHU because of its stellar ranking, entrepreneurial environment, and the central location of the Dusseldorf campus - and it really paid off! The school has excellent facilities, faculty, and the best and brightest students from across the world. Their curriculum integrates modern business principles and tools and the academic office makes every effort to help you build your customized academic plan to fit your exchange schedule.

WHU's integration efforts like the Cologne cathedral and brewery tours and exploring the Dusseldorf Altstadt really helped me integrate into the multi-cultural Dusseldorf society. Overall, my experience has been 11/10 and I'd recommend an exchange term at WHU in a heartbeat!"

"As someone who worked in Operations and Supply chain, WHU was one of my top choices for an exchange program. The spirit and curriculum of WHU is unique and student friendly. I had a wonderful time while studying here and, in my interactions with my peers and the faculty. There are multiple events both cultural and academic. There is so much to do here, and the school's enthusiasm is profound. The exchange program gave me an opportunity to interact with students of at least 12 nationalities. The classes were fun and engaging. The eminent professors ensure to impart the best learning experiences. This program helped me develop better networking opportunities, provide a global outlook on business development and a fun filled term with lifelong friendships."

"WHU not only provided an amazing academic and cultural experience through it's fantastic professors and flexible scheduling that allow exploring, but also the opportunity to make lifelong friends and connections. I bonded with fellow exchange students more than expected. I feel that choosing my exchange to be at WHU is one of the best decisions I've made!"

"WHU has been a delightful experience. I came here for an exchange semester with the idea of making the most of the opportunity. WHU offers a wide range of core courses and electives. I took a total of 8 courses and each of them was holistic in terms of content. The focus on practical application, learning from case studies, and working in groups were highly enjoyable. My personal favorite was the Mid-term strategy challenge, where teams competed against each in a multiple-round business game simulation. It was indeed a hands-on learning experience in strategy formulation, execution, and decision-making. Moreover, I thoroughly enjoyed the enriching in-class discussions and coffee chats with students from a highly distinguished cohort."

"WHU Dusseldorf has been a fantastic experience with welcoming staff, friendly cohort, and amazing professors. There are even resident swans on campus! Dusseldorf, although relatively small, is a centrally located city on the river with plenty of great food and fun. The location also allows easy travel across Europe. I have been really enjoying my time here both academically and for leisure!"

"There are too many perks to being an exchange student here at WHU. WHU is home to many entrepreneurs and professionals. The flexibility here was one of its kind and gave students the freedom to take as many courses taught by outstanding professors that worked with anyone's schedule. My experiences were beyond expectation and incredible. Feel free to contact me if you need a confidence boost to start your next journey at WHU!"

"My experience at WHU has been phenomenal. In terms of academic aspects, I liked the dynamic approach of the professors. In one of the courses, we employed ChatGPT, which was released just a few weeks before the course. The administration and MBA office staff really are supportive, even helping me practice my German. The Exchange office organized Düsseldorf and Köln (Cologne) city tours, which are great onboarding experiences to know the local culture. Another thing to be appreciated about the campus is its central location in Western Europe. One can take a train anytime and you’re in a different country in a few hours."

"MBA Exchange is a great way to experience a new culture, meet new people, travel, and grow. I chose WHU because of its reputation and location in Europe. I had never been to Europe before, so living and studying in Düsseldorf (Germany) for 4 months during the Fall 2022 semester was amazing. Germany is the center of Europe and offers so much to explore. The constant support from the IR & MBA offices, the quality of professors & students, and the frequent career & social events made my experience even richer. I liked studying Private Equity, Entrepreneurial Finance, Negotiations, and Family Business courses. Additionally, I enjoyed learning German and traveling to nearby countries. Overall, I am pretty happy with my decision to come to WHU and recommend that future MBA students consider it."
