On Friday, October 20, 2017, this year’s graduates of the MBA programs at WHU – Otto Beisheim School of Management celebrated the successful completion of their studies. For the first time, graduates of the Part-Time MBA Program and both Full-Time MBA Programs received their diplomas in a joint graduation ceremony held in the ballroom of the Hotel InterContinental on Königsallee in Düsseldorf. The graduates were joined at the ceremonies by family and friends, and by WHU professors and staff from Vallendar and Düsseldorf.
With the words “No one is an island,” Dean Professor Dr. Markus Rudolf emphasized the major importance of a personal network of friends and family, and the priceless value of free time and health, and advised the graduates never to forget what truly matters in life. Highlighting well-known studies of happiness that found that success and money alone do not lead to happiness, he offered the graduates a few final scholarly words of advice.
Before the official presentation of diplomas, the new graduates were offered a personal and inspiring keynote address by Shukla Bose, founder and CEO of the Parikrma Humanity Foundation, which operates schools and training centers for disadvantaged children in India. Bose, who gave up her own successful career in the hospitality sector 14 years ago to establish Parikrma, stressed the tremendous significance of social cohesion, compassion and meaningful activities for a fulfilled life. Relationships, Bose predicted, will form the moral links that will hold the new generation together. She encouraged the graduates to make responsible use of their newly acquired skills; what is important, she reminded them, is not well-filled but rather well-formed minds.
This year, the graduates once again bestowed the Best Teacher Award, a recognition presented to particularly dedicated professors for what the graduates consider to have been the best lecture course. The award by the Full-Time MBA Class of 2017 I went to Professor Dr. Jochen Menges. Graduates of the Full-Time MBA Class of 2017 II honored Professor Dr. Lutz Kaufmann and Professor Dr. Garen Markarian with the award. The Part-Time MBA Class of 2017 also presented the award to Professor Dr. Garen Markarian.
