The AXICA convention and conference center in Berlin, near Brandenburg Gate, provided the venue for the second Digital Leader Awards, presented in ceremonies held June 29, 2017, before 300 guests. Initiated by IDG Germany, Computerwoche, CIO and Dimension Data Germany, the competition is under the patronage of the German Federal Minister for Economy Affairs and Energy Brigitte Zypries.
An interdisciplinary panel of judges had the task of selecting award-winners from nearly 100 applications in six categories: Create Impact, Shape Experience, Invent Markets, Empower People, Spark Collaboration and Digitize Society.
Once again, WHU – Otto Beisheim School of Management was represented on the jury with Prof. Dr. Christian Schlereth as the scientific partner for the Digital Leader Award. The holder of the Chair of Digital Marketing was impressed by the variety of ideas and digital innovations: “It’s good that lots of companies in Germany have now recognized digitization as a central challenge and are engaged in serious reflection on the subject. Here in particular, the award-winners demonstrated their skills in developing concepts that were creative but also economically viable.”
On the evening of the ceremony, Christian Schlereth presented the award in the supreme discipline, “Create Impact,” to this year’s honoree in that category: the Lufthansa Innovation Lab. In his remarks in honor of the award recipient, he emphasized that digitization is subject to constant and consistent transformation and paid tribute to the awardee’s project, Open API, as an important step toward standardizing complex processes and opening these up to new markets. This ultimately permits the development of completely new business models in flight booking – a ticket of ten flights, for instance – with the first such initiatives already successfully brought to market.
