WHU Honors Prof. Dr. h.c. Klaus-Michael Kühne

With a festive ceremony, WHU – Otto Beisheim School of Management dedicated the largest lecture hall of its Düsseldorf campus to the President of the Board of Trustees of the Kühne Foundation, Professor Dr. h.c. Klaus-Michael Kühne. The Kühne Foundation has been supporting research and teaching in the field of logistics management at WHU for more than 30 years.

In the presence of the guest of honor Professor Kühne, on February 28, 2018, the 126-seat lecture hall was named the “Professor Dr. h.c. Klaus-Michael Kühne Auditorium.” In their remarks, Dr. Toni Calabretti, President of the WHU Foundation, and WHU Dean Professor Dr. Markus Rudolf enumerated the successes of the partnership with the Kühne Foundation to date and thanked Professor Kühne for his many years of personal dedication. He accompanied the evolution of WHU from a pioneering phase through to internationally recognized research in logistics. His lasting commitment and consistent, forward-looking support formed the basis for this success story.

Cooperation with the Kühne Foundation dates back to 1987 and began with support of an initial research project on the topic of “Logistics for small and medium-sized enterprises.” Cooperation steadily grew during the years that followed. When the Kühne Center for Logistics Management was founded in 2000, it established a platform for interaction between science and practice in the field of logistics service management. Five years later, the Kühne-Foundation endowed Chair in Logistics Management was founded. A second chair, the Foundation endowed Chair in Logistics and Services Management has been funded since 2011 by the Kühne Foundation. Then, in 2012, the two chairs were ultimately merged to form the Kühne Institute for Logistics Management at WHU.

This name-based patronship marks the second official honor bestowed by WHU on the Hamburg entrepreneur and Honorary President of Kühne + Nagel International AG. WHU presented Professor Dr. h.c. Klaus-Michael Kühne with an honorary doctorate in 2008 in recognition of his exemplary dedication and accomplishments in the field of logistics.
