Combination of demand management methodology and air traffic management leads to improved capacity planning.

As part of the successful Horizon 2020 research project COCTA (winning Jane’s ATC Innovation Award 2019), our paper on “Air Traffic Control Capacity Planning Under Demand and Capacity Provision Uncertainty”  has been accepted in the ERIM STAR journal Transportation Science. We propose a new methodology on managing air traffic centrally, as opposed to the current piece-meal practice. It adjusts capacity planning for anticipated future disruptions and other uncertainties surrounding demand for flight itineraries (variable e.g. due to weather, military or business aviation) as well uncertainties concerning supply of air traffic control provision (e.g. due to strikes).
