Night of Light 2020

Symbolic Action Illuminates the State of Emergency in the Event Industry

Not only at WHU - Otto Beisheim School of Management did events such as conferences, guest lectures, and student congresses have had to be canceled, but also in the whole world events such as theater performances, concerts, festivals, and trade fairs have been suspended ever since the outbreak of the corona crisis. The pandemic has forced entire branches of industries to shut down to counteract the spread of the virus.

With the "Night of Light" initiative, during the night of June 22 to 23, companies from the events industry sent out a signal to draw attention to the dramatic situation in the events industry. Like almost 9,000 other buildings of event organizers, companies, and institutions, the main building of WHU, the Marienburg on the Vallendar Campus, was illuminated in red. The event, which was, as the website states, intended to be a "flaming appeal and call for help to politicians to save the event industry”, aims to establish a dialog with politicians.

WHU expressed its solidarity with the events industry.
The Deutsches Eck also showed up in the signal color red.

The event’s initiator Tom Koperek, a board member of LK AG Essen, gave the initiative a face and, among others, could be seen in the preceding Livestream of the Night of Light-Talk. There he presented the idea of the Night of Light event. On the one hand, it is a possibility to develop positive energy. On the other hand, the chosen signal color red, stands for "’Red alert’, but also for love and passion, as we burn for what we do."
