The Bachelor Program offers an extensive range of courses in the areas of economics and business administration. As well as business knowledge, we support your development into an adaptable future leader. The BSc at WHU is more than just a degree – through internships, an exchange semester, and case studies, you will apply your knowledge to real-world situations. Upon graduation, you will be well-equipped for positions across all sectors and industries.
Starting in the final week of August of each year, the program is typically completed in three years (six semesters) and accounts for 180 credits. Extra credits may be gained through additional course options. The program is taught mainly in English with some courses offered only in German. You can choose to study completely in English.
Gain an excellent education – Preparing you for the world of business.
During the three-year program, you will spend five semesters at WHU and one semester abroad. Two summer internships, one of which must be completed abroad, expands your international reach. The program concludes with the Bachelor thesis.
The core modules will immerse you in all areas of business during the first semesters. A combination of electives, concentrations, seminars, and optional modules alongside a business game, internships, and time abroad will prepare you for the final part – your Bachelor thesis.
For more detailed information on the core courses per module, please see the Online Course Guide.
The core courses cover eight subject areas.
- Foundations of Economics
- Marketing and Sales
- Production, purchasing and logistics
- Entrepreneurship and innovation
- Management Controlling
- Micro- and macroeconomics
We ensure a personal and supportive learning atmosphere by limiting each course to 80 students.
Advanced modules are offered from the fourth semester onwards as this is based on the foundation of your core courses. The core courses will help you identify which areas of the company and the economy are of particular interest to you while the elective and concentrations help you focus further. You can choose between different subject areas such as International Economics or Entrepreneurship, but you can also take industry-specific specialisations such as Family Business, Creating Social Value or Brand Management.
With the broad range of courses, you can also specialize in different areas, like Event management, Sport management and Business law, that normally dont come to mind when you think of business studies. Some possible career options include:
Understand the use of mathematical tools in business with courses such as econometrics and market research methods. Seminars in finance, innovation and entrepreneurship, marketing and sales, management, supply chain management, and economics are also available. You will choose a total of four courses from different areas.
We place great emphasis on developing your broader thinking. Courses in this module range from philosophy, psychology, and engineering to history, culture, and politics. Question individual behavior and the influence of emotions on human decision-making. Learn strategies and methods, and understand important historical events that have shaped important cultural and technological developments.
Get to know the fundamentals of law through three compulsory courses in civil law, business law, and corporate law. To broaden your knowledge in this area, optional courses are available focusing on labor law, company tax law, capital market law, and restricting of companies. Upon successful completion of these additional courses, you will receive a Bucerius Law School certificate.
Everyone studies one language as part of their degree, and it is possible to take a second. We encourage international students to take German language courses. If you’re enrolled on the German/English track, you will have to take English courses unless you score at least 100 points in the internet-based TOEFL test (or equivalent).
The following languages are regularly offered at WHU:
All of our language courses are taught by native speakers. The course size varies between six to fourteen students.
We want you to experience business around the world. WHU has a network of nearly 200 international partner universities, and you will spend your fourth or fifth semester at one of these. As well as expanding the knowledge and skills gained in Vallendar, you will broaden your business acumen through experiences of different social, cultural, and economic environments.
The semester abroad is a key part of your business and personal development. To help you get the most from the experience, we offer a number of language courses and cultural trainings as preparation. You can choose the destination and university of your time abroad and we will do our best to accommodate your first choice. If one particularly university is oversubscribed, placement decisions will be based on your performance during the first two semesters.
Gain a competitive edge by completing two internships over the duration of your degree. Each internship must last a minimum of four weeks, but we encourage our students to do a longer internship, e.g. ten to twelve weeks, to get an even greater experience. Your first internship takes place after the second semester while the second internship should begin after your fourth semester. One of the two internships has to be completed in a non-German-speaking country to help you hone your intercultural competencies. Our Career Center supports you in finding an internship position via a broad range of activities such as counseling, training, career fairs, and company presentations.
In your final semester, you will have eight weeks to write your Bachelor thesis. During this period, you will demonstrate your ability to independently expand on an economic subject using academic methods. When necessary, complex topics can be tackled in teams of two or three students.
