Statistics I covers the basics of probabilities and descriptive statistics. The course puts in the foundation for more advanced data analysis. The topics include:
  • Description in one and many dimensions (graphical represenation, distribution function and cumulative frequencies distribution, measures of center and variaion, percentils, measures of correlation, regression)
  • Probabilities (random samples, combinatorics, conditional probabilities, Bayes' theorem)
  • Discrete and continuous random variables in one and many dimensions

Upon completing the course Statistics I students will have a basic understanding about the first steps of data analysis. This involves three components. First, students will know how to describe raw data, both numerically and graphically. Second, students have a basic understanding of probabilities and will be able to apply this both theoretically and in practice. Third, students will be able to describe and analyze random variables and their distributions.

In class we cover the basic ideas and theories. To this end, we will use both many examples and some theoretical and formal reasoning. Moreover, assignments and problem sets will be provided for further application and study.
