This course provides a comprehensive introduction to financial accounting. It is explored to understand the accounting techniques and its impact on financial statements. This understanding enables the participants to use accounting for internal management purposes (planning, directing, controlling etc.) as well as corporate communication purposes (capital markets, banks, rating agencies etc.). Moreover, participants obtain a working background which can be extended in further studies in management, finance and other business disciplines.

Course content
This course is designed to provide students with an understanding of the practice and the theory of financial reporting. More concretely, the main course objectives are as follows:
- to acquaint you with the basic techniques of financial accounting and reporting;
- to familiarize you with the main components of financial statements, i.e., the balance sheet, the income statement, and the cash flow statement, and to understand how they relate to each other;
- to introduce and discuss the requirements for recognition, measurement and disclosure with regard to the most important accounting topics that are of relevance to managers, analysts, investors, and other users of financial reporting information; and
- to raise your awareness of the economic consequences of financial reporting, from the perspectives of preparers and of users of IFRS financial statement.
Throughout the course, we will focus primarily on International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS), but will also talk about other standards where appropriate, for example, German accounting standards (HGB) or US accounting standards (US GAAP).
